209 Radio

I've just received the devastating news that 209 Radio in Cambridge is to close due to a lack of funding. I must say that I'm devastated.......that it didn't close down years ago. This so called service to the community was a group of wanna be DJ's who in my opinion shouldn't even be allowed to speak in public, let alone on the radio.
They've started a campaign to get funding from the community to save this valuable resource. Yet if it was truly valued, there wouldn't be a problem. People would be flocking to advertise on it.And yet.
My problem is these people are playing at radio for an ego boost. I've heard some very badly researched and presented shows including a half wit girl bleating on about how she's great friends with all the local bands in Cambridge, then telling us about her non existent social life, a load of posh students taking part in a quiz presented by someone who sounds as if he was given elocution lessons by The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and even a full hour of a loud, piercing whistle, showing how arty they are. Now why would people not want to tune into that?
If they really want money, rather than bleating on about how they need advertising and businesses need to support them, they should be in their local high street with collection buckets. Then the local people will be able to support this valuable resource.Or perhaps they'll tell them what they think of the station.
But as far as I'm concerned, 209 Radio, good riddance.

Who's number one ?

Here's something I found which I'll simply paste because I believe it's of great interest.
Let's get The Who to number one
Iconic music legends The Who have never had a number 1 single in the UK charts. This seems wrong, somehow, especially considering the general excellence of their back-catalogue. Here's the idea then - you and everyone you know needs to download an MP3 of The Who's "Baba O'Riley" from a reputable retailer whose sales contribute to the UK chart (iTunes, HMV, 7-Digital, Napster, that kind of thing), and we get The Who to the top of the charts.

The key thing to remember though is this: we all need to do this in the same week. So, in the week commencing Monday 16th November 2009, you need to get online and buy "Baba O'Riley"... and you need to get all your friends to do the same thing... and they need to get all their friends... and so on.

Not only can we set right a musical wrong by finally giving The Who a chart-topper, we can also demonstrate the combined might of social networking. So whether you tweet, post, blog, poke, or anything else - tell everyone: buy The Who's "Baba O'Riley" as an MP3 download in the week commencing Monday 16th November 2009.

Where to buy... but not until week commencing 16th November 2009!

iTunes, HMV.com, Napster, 7 digital or Amazon.

The future of radio?

I've recently been checking out the competition. I've been listening to large amounts of community stations and internet radio programmes. And with very few exceptions, they've all missed the point. So many of them are purely doing a watered down version of commercial FM radio, with in some cases even worse presenters. I didn't realise this was possible, but believe me, it is.
For the new form of radio to survive, we need to be the innovators, not the followers. There are so many people in the market providing late night love songs or the best hits from the '80's, '90's and '90's, a concept invented in the 1980's by the hideous GWR (Great Western Radio) which ruined commercial radio. This boring format can be found anywhere, try something different. There's many untapped genres of music out there with a ready fan base waiting to be served. So let's serve them, and watch our audiences grow.

The X Factor

It's back on our screens, a way for Simon Cowell and ITV to make money, I'm sorry, I mean give some poor undiscovered kid a break.
Yeah, right. The early rounds are like ritual humiliation, and now they've added an audience, it's a bit like the Romans throwing Christians to the lions. If you enjoy the early stages and watching a lot of these people who think they can sing, then you're a follower of blood sports. It's the same as making fun of the mentally ill.
And then there are the judges. These knowledgeable people have the nerve to criticise others. Let's see who they are. 1) Simon Cowell. A man who admits not to liking music, yet likes it if it makes him money. When he uses one of his pre-prepared put downs on another mentally ill person who think they can sing, how we laugh. And we always say,"you're so right Simon",on his verdicts. He's not so right, he's looking for a certain whiny tone.Would Roger Daltrey get through? I doubt it but he has more relevance than all the contestants put together. And Simon always champions someone with no ability who is constantly out of tune.
2)Louis Walsh. A man responsible for some chicken in the basket cover bands, including Westlife, Boyzone and Girls Aloud. One day he will answer for his henious crimes.
3)Danni Minogue. Had a few totally forgettable songs around ten years ago.
4)Cheryl Cole. Can't sing.People soon forget she has a conviction for assaulting a cleaner, using foul language against her. Let me correct myself here. Can't sing and is a nasty thug.
And these hypocrites who have the nerve to criticise others gave Girls Aloud a standing ovation for a completely out of tune performance.
And then you have the contestants. Those stupid kids who act as if their lives have ended because they didn't get through an audition or boot camp.Whatever happened to the love of performing, not the desire to be a superstar. They should all grow up.
And then you have the host. Dermot O' Leary is the only person who makes me long for the return of the irritant Kate Thornton.Watch and laugh as he bumbles his way through the introduction, gasp in wonder as he manages to ask the most inane questions to the contestants known to man. This is proof of what happens if you employ someone based on their looks alone.
In short, I hate the X factor, it has no meaning or relevance apart from making money.Even the winner will be forgotten within a year.Watch it at your peril.

Michael Jackson

So, a very talented and disturbed man dies at 50. The radio has been saturated with his songs (makes a change from Girls Aloud and other similar dirge) and people are acting as if their best friend has passed away. All very royal family, apart from when a member of the royal family dies, you have to put up with a week of non stop funeral type music everywhere, and it's dull, dull, dull.
I don't think even the most fanatical Michael Jackson fan can say that he's blameless for this, he had the talent, the money and the personal doctor and yet never realised a way to stay alive was to possibly not follow the example of Judy Garland and Elvis Presley and mess around with yourself through pills and in Jackson's case, extreme surgery.
The last time I was in the US, the TV and radio was full of commercials for pills and medication drugs. "Got heartburn, feel aching sensation in your arms, then buy these". No, those symptoms say you need a doctor, yet because all health in America has to be instantly paid for or you need massive personal insurance, I suspect many people choose to patch up any signs of injury with pills. Despite the UK's faults, thank god for the national health service.
This wasn't the case as far as Michael was concerned, it was just that nobody told him it wasn't a good idea to do those things to himself and his face. Look at how handsome he was at the time of Thriller compared to recent pictures. These "friends" and family should question their actions. "We love you Michael", they now say. Obviously not enough to stop him killing himself.

Feed the world

One of the social phenomenons of late are networking groups like Facebook. All good fun and very useful, I even have a page set up for this show and one for myself so I can put cryptic people in their place. You know the type, "John is feeling down". And then lots of people reply, "Why are you down John, please tell us?" From now on I can respond to such attention seekers by saying, "Dominic couldn't care less"
Recently, there's been a spate of people on Facebook asking everyone to sponsor them for this race for life or that charity bike event. All well and good, but where does it stop? I am fed up of people continually approaching me for some cause which is dear to their heart, asking sponsorship for some puerile exercise that they get some sadistic pleasure out of (long distance running or cycling usually). If these people were so intent on helping these good causes(which many undoubtedly are)then they should put their hands in their own pockets and leave the rest of us alone.
I know this sounds harsh, but think about it. Don't you know someone who regularly is armed with raffle tickets for this cause or that cause, and don't you try and avoid this person at all costs?
It's got to the stage where many offices have an outright ban on all raffle tickets. There are many excellent charities out there, Christian Aid, Help the children, Race for life come to mind. Everyone with a roof over their head should give something to charity, but I think charity giving should be whatever moves you personally to do and should also be done privately.

Female TV presenters

Why is it that the UK has some of the worst female TV presenters? At the top of the loathsome list is the highly irritating, very untalented Davina McCall.Whenever I accidentally come across this screaming, shouting attention seeking idiot, I envy those who live abroad and have never heard of her.Add to the list Ferne Cotton (relative of the famous Cotton broadcasting family, I wonder how she got the job). Her interviewing techniques are second to all. When she was talking to the crowd at Live 8, all she could ask was what people were feeling that day, always getting the response,"terrific". It's the kind of thing most people are told not to do on their first day in hospital/student radio.
Add to this list of shouting untalented fools, Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, the only question left is how these nobodies keep getting work.Believe me, there's no jealousy, I have no desire whatsoever to appear on TV.I just don't want these untalented people on there either.
